Once
the headquarters of a Bhutanese Governor, the word 'Kalim'
means King's Minister and 'Pong' - the stronghold of
the King's minister. As per Lepcha Tribe, one of the
oldest tribe of this region, they had given the meaning
of Kalimpong as "ridges where we play" while
not engaged in agricultural pursuits.
Nestling in the lush green mid ranges of the Himalayas,
Kalimpong, hill station of "the Raj", has
an incredible stunning backdrop of towering snow capped
peaks. This exotic town of beautiful people, mystical
and enchanting, with a rare ethnic blend of hill people,
has a tradition of hospitality from the days of the
mule caravans of olde.
Located just 80 kms from the Airport and Railheads,
at an altitude of 1,250 metres, it has a moderate climate
ranging from between 15°C to 25°C in Summer
and 7°C to 15°C in Winter, offering year round
comfort. An ideal place for a holiday home to relax
and laze for few days.
The picture post card countryside around Kalimpong has
a vast range of forests around Lava and Loleygaon, the
wild and protected Neora National Park reaching up to
the 3,152 metre high Rachela trijunction between Bhutan,
Sikkim and West Bengal. The meandering river valleys
of Git, Rishi, Rilli and the mighty Teesta and the enchanting
Samthar Plateau. All these are Nature's gifts to us,
which make our region an all round holiday destination.
Most visitors come for a few days, linger on, and come
again to savoir the many holiday options available.
During the British rule once Kalimpong was prime trade
centre for wool between India and Tibet.
Kalimpong has become a centre for education, where thousands
of students come from different states and neighboring
countries like Bhutan and Nepal as well.
A Kalimpong based holiday, with forays into the countryside
offers a true "Town and Country" holiday,
comprising Kalimpong town delights, relaxation, walking
and trekking holidays, forest and flora exploration,
bird and butterfly watching, Buddhist tours and meditation,
River Rafting (at river Teesta), Mountain Biking, and
nature and Culture tours, or just a "relax and
laze" holiday.
